A Jiu Jitsu Freak & A Wandering Yogi met and fell in love!
Michael was a geologist from Ontario who had a black belt in JiuJitsu. Diane just left nursing to be a wandering yogi .
A series of serendipitous events caused their worlds to collide – and they met and fell in love.
Acting on their shared vision of building a life based on passion and art, they started Sadohana Dojo out of their backyard and living room from Quebec St. in 1997.

They welcomed boy and girl twins in 1998. Moved into a town home on Cambie St. and turned their master bedroom into a dojo.
Inspired by Michael’s passion for Jiu Jitsu, Diane, a dedicated Yogini~ began to study the traditional Japanese martial art– and found it just as spiritually, mentally, and physically rewarding as the yoga and meditation she had been practicing since 1994.
Still the Sadohana community kept growing... we met in a film studio in Gastown, a flex space in JapanTown, a fitness gym and a corporate board room in Burnaby Heights.~
In 2009, we opened our own 3200-square studio at #101-3570 East Hastings where Sadohana Vancouver is today! In 2012 we opened Sadohana Gibsons, again in our living room first, then into a few shared spaces before building our own beauty space at #201-1058 Gibsons Way
We are more than just training partners!
We celebrate member marriages and birthdays. We carpool resources when someone is in need and help our fellow members move pianos and houses.
Many of our members have been a part of the Sadohana community since the very beginning. We are an important part of each other’s lives.
And with long-time members now bringing their kids to classes, we’re watching the second-generation of Sadohana practitioners develop their skills and discover what they’re capable of achieving.
