A JuJutsu freak & a wandering Yogi met and fell in love
How Sadohana began...
Michael was a geologist from Ontario who had a black belt in JuJutsu. Diane just left nursing to be a wandering yogi .
A series of serendipitous events caused their worlds to collide – and they met and fell in love.
Inspired by Michael’s passion for JuJutsu, Diane, a dedicated Yogini~ began to study the traditional Japanese martial art– and found it just as spiritually, mentally, and physically rewarding as the yoga and meditation she had been practicing since 1994.
Acting on their shared vision of building a life based on passion and art, Michael and Diane started Sadohana Dojo in their living room in 1997.
Things got a bit crazy with the arrival of newborn twins in 1998, but our small JuJutsu & Yoga community kept growing. The living room practice sessions moved to the backyard, where Michael and his students once caught a robber who was running from the police. (Did that guy ever pick the wrong yard to sneak into!)
To accommodate the growing number of students, Michael and Diane transformed their master bedroom into a dojo – then when we outgrew that space, moved our classes to a local recreation centre.
Still the Sadohana community kept growing... we met in a film studio in Gastown, a flex space in JapanTown, a fitness gym and a corporate board room in Burnaby Heights.
In 2009, we opened our own 3200-square studio at #101-3570 East Hastings.
The space was originally an old bike garage with orange walls, tiny rooms and an oil-stained warehouse. Our amazing members worked for one month, spending their free time demolishing walls, scraping laminate, painting and building to create Sadohana’s beautiful new home.
We have custom shoji-screened change rooms built by a master carpenter, a hand-carved stair rail, up-cycled flooring, lobby hang out with a custom desk by Matt Kidd, donated dishes and a fridge we found on Craigslist filled with beer! (by the students not Craigslist)
And it all looks incredibly elegant, high end and inviting
We're not just training partners~we're a family
Many of our members have been a part of the Sadohana community since the very beginning. We are an important part of each other’s lives.
We celebrate member marriages and birthdays. We carpool resources when someone is in need and help our fellow members move pianos and houses.
And with long-time members now bringing their kids to classes, we’re watching the second-generation of Sadohana practitioners develop their skills and discover what they’re capable of achieving.
(Which is so incredibly awesome.)
Sadohana now has 2 locations: 101-3570 East Hastings, Vancouver BC & 3-851 Gibsons Way, Gibsons, BC + six affiliate groups under our direction – four in Canada and two in USA.
We offer a safe, beginner-friendly training environment and a welcoming community who will support you as you develop your mind and body.
