Sri T. Krishnamacharya 1888-1989

Sri. T. Krishnamacharya was one of the most influential Yoga Masters of all time and the Founder of Yoga Therapy He introduced the world to what an evolving practice of Yoga looks like and taught us to “Teach what is inside you, not as it applies to you, but as it applies to the other.” He emphasized that the practice of yoga must be adapted to the individual, and not the individual to yoga. He was the teachers' teacher.

If you practice Ashtanga Yoga, Krishamacharya was your founder's teacher.

If you practice Iyengar Yoga, the founding teacher's teacher was Krishnamacharya.

It is difficult to find an Asana tradition he hasn't influenced. Even if you learned from someone now outside the traditions associated with Krishnamacharya, there's a very good chance your teacher trained in Iyengar, Ashtanga, or Viniyoga lineages before developing their own style.

Notable students include Pattabhi Jois, B.K.S. Iyengar-who taught Rodney Yee, Indra Devi –who taught Richard Hittleman and his son, T.K.V. Desikachar—who taught Gary Krafstow.

He was a visionary by insisting that anyone could learn Vedic chanting and a pioneer by refining postures, sequencing them in a specific order, and ascribing therapeutic value to these poses or Asanas. Krishnamacharya believed a yoga practice was as a source of great power. He believed a Yoga practice was a method of self-inquiry or SVADHYAYA, observing your actions and reactions.
